GREENSBORO, N.C. –University Police have determined that it was an umbrella, not a gun that caused a three-hour lockdown at North Carolina A&T on Friday.

After reviewing surveillance video, police determined witnesses mistook a man carrying an umbrella, for a man carrying a gun into the school’s General Classroom Building.

A three-hour lockdown at the school was lifted earlier this afternoon and students were allowed back on campus, after the A&T Police Department received a report of an unknown man with rifle earlier this morning.

An earlier lockdown that affected eight GCS schools has been cancelled as of 12:15 p.m. All schools have resumed a normal schedule.

The STEM Early College and Middle College, which are located on the university’s campus, were part of the lockdown, as were Aycock Middle, The Middle College at Bennett, Bluford Elementary, Dudley High, The Academy at Lincoln and Washington Elementary.

All schools followed lockdown procedures because of their proximity to the campus, per the direction of law enforcement.

Around 9 a.m., the A&T Police Department received a report of an unknown black male with a rifle in the area of the General Classroom Building.

Around 12:15 p.m., Nicole Pride, the Communications Chief at North Carolina A&T, confirmed the lockdown had been lifted.

Pride said the suspect has been been located. He is described as approximately 5’11” wearing a blue jacket, blue jeans, blue cap and white t-shirt.

photoCrosby Hall, Merrick Hall and the General Classroom Building at A&T were evacuated during the search.

A&T could not say if the suspect is a student.

The school posted the following alerts:
