POLK COUNTY, N.C. — Criminal charges are pending after four alpacas and one llama were found dead on a small North Carolina farm Thursday morning, according to WLOS.

Deputies said they responded to a complaint about the welfare of the animals on the farm in Polk County. The officers discovered one of the remaining llamas to be emaciated and in such poor health that immediate euthanization was required.

On Thursday afternoon, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office obtained a temporary order for the immediate seizure of the animals. On Friday morning, a permanent order was signed giving Polk County custody of the remaining 12 animals.

“The animals are just in such poor condition at this point that they need medical attention and they need to be isolated away from healthy animals,” said Lt. Lowell Griffin.
