WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — More than one million square feet of mixed use development will begin construction at the end of 2015 surrounding BB&T Ballpark.
Winston-Salem Dash President Geoff Lassiter said the project gives fans and tourists a chance to live, work and play in the same neighborhood.
"We want it to be a destination place where all three of those dreams can happen," Lassiter said.
The construction of 580 apartment flats, retail, office space, 250 hotel rooms, restaurants and possibly a grocery store will be built on the north and east side of the stadium on existing parking lots.
"The good news is the new tax revenue from the project will for the cost of the parking deck so it will not cost the taxpayers any dollars to build a parking facility," Mayor Allen Joines said.
Mayor Joines said the city looked at two other companies but Brand Properties guarantee production that will promote job growth.
"Brand properties came forth with the most comprehensive plan, the ability to finance it, the ability to guarantee the investment which is crucial to us to be able to forward to say we'll build what we say we're going to build," Joines said.
Brand Properties based in Atlanta is the developer for the project.
