OAK RIDGE, N.C. — The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash that killed one person and injured another Sunday afternoon.

At about 12:20 p.m., troopers responded to a fatal collision involving a motorcycle and a truck on Highway 68 at the Historic Old Mill.

A Harley Davidson Motorcycle and a 2002 GMC truck were both traveling south when the motorcycle stopped to make a left turn into Old Mill and the truck struck the motorcycle from behind. The driver, 44-year-old Jody Edward Payne, was killed and the passenger, 49-year-old Jacquelyn Hamilton Sullivan, was taken to Moses Cone Hospital with serious injuries.

The truck driver, 21-year-old Nolan Scott Cole, failed to reduce speed, which led to the collision and injuries. He was not injured and has been charged with death by motor vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing and alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
