MIAMI — The mother of the face-chewing naked attacker in Miami is saying her son was a “nice kid” and not a zombie.
“He gave me a nice card on Mother’s Day. Everyone says he was a zombie. He was no zombie. That was my son,” said the mother, who asked that her name not be revealed, according to CNN affliate WFOR.
Rudy Eugene, 31, was killed by a police officer on Saturday after an 18-minute attack on a 65-year-old homeless man.
Video shows Eugene coming across the victim on a sidewalk, stripping off his clothes and chewing on his face.
Police said the victim lost 75 percent of his face and was hospitalized in critical condition at a Miami hospital.
Eugene’s mother said her son did not need to be shot and killed.
“They could have tased him,” she told WFOR. “I saw what happened on TV and I started crying.”
Eugene’s girlfriend, who also asked to remain anonymity, said the “zombie-like” attacker is nothing like her former boyfriend.
“He loved God,” she said. “He always read the Bible. He would give you knowledge on the Bible. Everywhere he went his Bible went. When he left he had his Bible in his hand.”
Officials said Eugene may have been under the influence of “bath salts” during the attack — a drug containing synthetic stimulants that can cause hallucinations, extreme paranoia and delusions and other effects.
