ERSKINE, Scotland — A mother faced serious backlash after posting a photo on Facebook of her toddler with Down syndrome in a washing machine.
According to the Scottish Daily Record, Courtney Stewart, 21, has been called a “scumbag,” questioned by police and assaulted on her doorstep over the incident.
Stewart, however, defended her actions, saying her son was in her care and that, “He loves the washing machine. We took a picture and it was a laugh.”
Many on Facebook condemned the photo, with one person saying it was “terrible to look at.”
Stewart said her son has a bit of a “washing obsession” and that he climbed into the machine of his own accord.
Stewart was reported to police over the photo.
A police spokeswoman confirmed to the Daily Record that Stewart had been spoken to. The spokeswoman said, “Advice was given. Relevant child care checks were made.”
Stewart said the washing machine was unplugged at the time of the photo and that there was no way the boy could have been harmed.
She claims she was also assaulted on her own doorstep over the photo. The Daily Record confirmed a 42-year-old woman was arrested over the alleged assault.
Stewart took the photo off Facebook after she was reported to police.
