NEW BERN, N.C. — A mother has been charged with DWI in connection to a crash that killed her 9-year-old daughter in North Carolina.

WCTI reported that 41-year-old Billie Joe Ellis faces charges after the fatal crash Sunday morning in Craven County.

Ellis was allegedly driving and ran off the road, then returned to the road, crossed the centerline and was struck by another vehicle.

Authorities said her 9-year-old daughter was in the vehicle and died at the scene. The woman driving the other vehicle and her 7-year-old son were also injured.

The mother was injured as well and was said to be in critical condition. She has been charged with DWI and reckless driving.
