SANFORD, N.C. -- A mother and her 6-year-old daughter were killed after the driver, Jessica Kuk, crashed into a North Carolina pond Saturday afternoon.

Authorities told WRAL that Kuk ran off of Cedar Lane in Sanford, overcorrected, veered past the median and overturned into a pond around 2 p.m.

Her daughter, Kristina Smith, was killed in the initial crash and Kuk died Sunday as a result of her injuries.

Jessica was such a kindhearted person with a special love for God and her congregation," a family member said in a GoFundMe post. "Kristina was shy but full of life and had a smile to light up the room."

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said that speed was a factor in the crash. Kuk had charges prior to her death.
