CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Authorities said around 800 gallons of gasoline valued at more than $3,000 was stolen from a Charlotte gas station after a gas pump was rigged.
Investigators told WSOC-TV that one of the suspects disabled the inside of a gas pump so the gasoline would flow freely.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the crime was reported over the weekend at the Gas and Go in South Charlotte.
Officials said it happened while the business was open and customers were present. Store employees said they didn’t realize it was happening.
The driver of a red Ford Explorer reportedly pulled up to a pump and sat there for around 20 minutes. Business operator Young Lim said he believes that is when the pump was rigged.
Surveillance video shows several vehicles pulled up to various pumps. Lim said he believes they were trying to block the clerk’s view while they all stole gas.
Police said $500 worth of gas was also recently stolen from the Circle K on the Plaza. Police have not said if the crimes are related.
