Hundreds of thousands of people are without power in North Carolina.

The total number of outages in the state is about 538,000, according to North Carolina Emergency Management.

The most affected counties include New Hanover, Brunswick, Carteret, Cumberland and Robeson counties.

With storm surge warnings and watches for much of the state’s coast, it is possible to see those numbers grow as the hurricane nears.
