Rolla, Mo. — A baby was discovered in a burning car by a mother returning from a short trip inside a restaurant to pick up a pizza, FOX2 reported.
A 911 call was made to Rolla police about an unresponsive child found in the back of a burning car Thursday afternoon. The mom took the 10-month-old child from the back of the burning vehicle and brought him into the pizza parlor in the 200 block of Highway 63 South. Police say the child was not breathing.
“She was hysterical, she was all over the place screaming and crying. Just was probably the same way I would be if it were one of my children,” said Gina Coffman, restaurant manager.
Brandy Baker, an off-duty paramedic, just happened to be nearby when she heard the mother’s screams. She began administering CPR and the baby started breathing again.
“I believe God had his hand on my shoulder during that whole entire couple of minutes,” Baker said.
The baby was immediately taken to the hospital and then airlifted to another hospital in St. Louis for further treatment.
An investigation revealed that the mother left the child unattended inside the vehicle. Rolla police are working to determine if any laws were broken, including child endangerment.
