MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — A Mount Airy woman has been charged with child abuse after her toddler reportedly wandered into a roadway unattended.

The Mount Airy News reports 34-year-old Shauna Suzanne Dean was charged with misdemeanor child abuse following the Wednesday incident.

According to the paper, Dean fell asleep at her home on Lovill Street before her child, who was described as younger than the age of 3, walked out of their home and wandered into the street.

Police Chief Dale Watson tells the paper the toddler was found by housing authority workers near the intersection at Virginia Street.  Watson said “it was a considerable distance” from the mother’s home.

The child was not injured, the paper reports.

Dean was released on a written promise to appear in court.
