LAKEWOOD, N.J. — A prosecutor’s office in New Jersey says a toddler whose body was found inside a septic tank behind her home died of accidental drowning.

Authorities say they don’t suspect foul play in the death of the girl, who’s been identified only by the initials J.C.

The 2-year-old was reported missing by her mother, Marina Matias, shortly before 5 p.m. Monday in Ocean County near the Jersey shore. She had been playing in the yard with her four siblings.

Search teams quickly found a 3-foot-wide hole in the yard that led to a septic tank. The Public Works Department was called to pump water from the tank. The girl’s body was found at 7:30 p.m.
