ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — The missing Madison man has been found, according to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department.

Roy Lee Reid, 44, was located after he contacted family members by phone and told them he had climbed out of the hole he had fallen into Thursday afternoon.

Rescue workers found Reid near a pickup truck at the Stokes/Rockingham County line.

Reid was taken to a local hospital but appears to be fine.

According to the sheriff’s office, at 2:20 p.m. Thursday, 911 dispatchers received a call from one of Reid’s family members saying he had fallen down a hole in a wooded area.

Search and rescue efforts by the sheriff’s office, Rockingham County Emergency Management and other emergency services personnel began shortly after the call was received.

Rescuers said they believe Reid’s cell phone may have died after he made contact with the family member.

Reid told emergency workers by phone Thursday that he was unable to call 911 due to a cell phone malfunction. Had he been able to call 911, the sheriff’s office said GPS coordinates of the phone could have possibly been plotted more accurately.

The search was called off due to weather early Friday morning but resumed by mid-morning.
