HIGH POINT, N.C. — Gov. Pat McCrory announced Wednesday a furniture company will bring 113 new jobs to High Point and invest $1.75 million in the city over the next five years.

BuzziSpace, a Belgian company which designs and manufactures furniture and acoustical treatments, will locate its United States headquarters at the empty 105,000-sq. ft. building at 1200 Redding Dr., formerly the Pickett Cotton Mill and most recently Claude Gable Co.

Last year, city officials revealed the European furniture company was considering High Point as one of three locations to base its American manufacturing operations.

“Industry is moving back to the United States,” said Governor Pat McCrory at the news conference. “It’s moving back to North Carolina and moving back to High Point.”

McCrory said the company will not only bring jobs to High Point, but it will “revive” an entire neighborhood.

“That is a place where we want to create pride back in the area,” said BuzziSpace CEO Tom Van Dessel.

It’s the kind of pride people like Alan Everhart say was stripped from the area when it was booming in the 1990s.

“It was a hot industry,” said Everhart who used to sell veneer to furniture companies in High Point in the 1990s. He says the industry got cold a decade later, when many jobs in High Point’s furniture industry were shipped overseas along with Everhart’s.

“Instead of it being sold here locally, it was being sold over there,” Everhart said.

It’s a trend he and city leaders hope BuzziSpace will help reverse.

“People are struggling,” Everhart said. “So this is going to be a good thing.”

High Point Mayor Bernita Sims said the new jobs are vital to reinvigorating High Point, and says the company will bring “buzz” to the area.

“We’ll be able to reinvigorate and excite some continued growth in that area,” said High Point Mayor Bernita Sims.

The average pay will be $41,011, according to a 2013 report. Jobs will include manufacturing and distribution, customer service and office and management positions.

Construction on the building is expected to start by this summer.
