HOMOSASSA, Fla. — A Florida man suffocated his crying son so he could play video games and watch television, according to multiple media reports.

Cody Wygant, 24, is charged with third-degree murder and child neglect. He was being held Friday without bail.

Sixteen-month-old Daymeon Wygant was unconscious and not breathing when crews arrived at the home on Thursday. The child was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

“It is inconceivable that a father could kill his infant son — it just baffles the mind,” Sheriff Jeff Dawsy told the Associated Press. “Our only sense of relief now comes from knowing that we did exactly what we needed to do to bring justice to him swiftly. Our prayers go out to those who knew and loved Daymeon.”

Wygant told deputies he was frustrated because the boy was crying uncontrollably, preventing him from playing his Xbox games and watching TV.

Deputies said Wygant covered the boy’s nose and mouth for 3-4 minutes until he became “lethargic,” then placed him in a playpen and then tucked bedding around the boy’s body and head.

Deputies said Wygant didn’t check on the baby for over five hours. When he finally checked on the child, he was “blue and unresponsive.”

Wygant is the primary care giver for the child. The mother, Wygant’s girlfriend, was not home at the time.

The couple also has a 3-month-old girl that is now in custody of the Department of Children and Families.
