Suspect accused of shooting W-S man in head, leading police on car chase

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man was shot in the head Tuesday night and police say the suspect led them on a car chase in Winston-Salem.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting at 5410 Angel Oaks Drive around 11:30 p.m.

They found the homeowner Christopher McCorkle, 50, suffering from a gunshot wound to his head and his vehicle, an Acura, had been stolen from his home.

Officers later spotted the stolen Acura and attempted to pull the car over. The driver of the Acura, later to be discovered as Patrick Smith, failed to stop for police.

Officers chased the stolen vehicle until it was forced to stop on Baux Mountain Road at Opportunity Road. No injury or property damage occurred as a result of the vehicle chase.

Smith, 23, of 904 Wilcox St., has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, larceny of a motor vehicle, felony speeding to elude arrest, careless and reckless driving, resisting arrest and driving while license is revoked.

Smith’s bond was set at $200,000 and his first court date is Dec. 27.

McCorkle was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries, and he is expected to recover.
