SEATTLE — A Seattle man set his home on fire while trying to kill a spider with a homemade blowtorch on Tuesday, Seattle police said.

The man was trying to kill a spider in the laundry room using a can of spray paint and a lighter, authorities said. The flames quickly spread throughout the home into the attic.

The man lived in the home with his mother. When the fire got out of control, he called 911.

The fire reportedly caused $40,000 damage to the structure and the man lost $20,000 worth of contents.

Neighbors hosed down their houses and yards to try to keep the flames from spreading.
