ASHEVILLE, N.C. — A Buncombe County man has been sentenced to at least nine years in prison for the stabbing death of another man during a fight.
Fifty-one-year-old Harold Sammons was convicted in Asheville of voluntary manslaughter in the 2010 stabbing death of 41-year-old Toby Bishop.
Sammons apologized Monday as he was sentenced for the stabbing that occurred during a fight at a mobile home park. Prosecutors said Sammons stabbed Bishop because he thought he was pursuing Sammons’ girlfriend.
Defense attorneys said Sammons acted in self-defense.
He also was ordered to pay for Bishop’s funeral and for attorney fees.
