ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — A body was discovered by a man canoeing on the Haw River Wednesday afternoon, according to a news release from the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.

At 3:30 p.m., Alamance Central Communications received a call from a man who said he saw what he believed to be a body near the Swepsonville-Saxapahaw bridge while canoeing.

When authorities arrived, they were directed to an area along a trail behind Saxapahaw Rivermill apartments, located at 1735 Saxapahaw-Bethlehem Church Road.

The body was located at the bottom of a steep incline about five feet from the shoreline, the release said.

The deceased was identified as 50-year-old Sammy Lee Riley, according to the sheriff’s office. His last known address was in Mebane.

The body was transported to Alamance Regional Medical Center. An autopsy is pending to confirm the cause of death.
