LOWGAP, N.C. — Authorities said a man trying to start a tractor was killed Saturday afternoon when the tractor’s rear wheel caught him and pulled him beneath the tractor.
Surry County EMS officials said 73-year-old William Leonard Hodges was standing in front of the left wheel of the tractor when he cranked it.
Surry County EMS Director John Shelton said the tractor went into gear and pulled the man underneath the wheel. Shelton said the man was killed almost immediately and came to rest between the rear wheel and a cultivator attached to the tractor.
Authorities said the incident occurred about 2:50 p.m. off Haystack Road.
Shelton said the tractor was an older model that did not have the type of ignition switch that would prevent it from starting in gear.
The man’s wife and grandson were in the area when the accident happened in an outside shed to the back of the man’s house.
The Skull Camp Fire and Rescue Department as well as rescue squads from Mount Airy and Dobson and the Surry EMS all responded.
