CLINTON, N.C. — The North Carolina Highway Patrol said a man committed suicide south of Clinton Thursday afternoon after officers stopped to check on him.
It happened on U.S. 701 near Boney Mill Road about 9 miles south of Clinton.
Two Sampson County troopers stopped just before 7 a.m. to check on what they said they thought was a stranded motorist sitting in a Subaru station wagon.
When they approached the car, the man made a threatening statement. Troopers retreated to a safe distance while a robot used to deal with explosive devices was brought in.
Nearby homes were evacuated.
