KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — A man has been charged in a fatal accident that happened on Business 40 in May.

Carlos Arturo Amaya Martinez, 40, of Winston-Salem, is charged with operating a vehicle without a driver’s license, failure to maintain lane control and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, according to a news release from Kernersville police.

The accident was discovered by a Kernersville police officer at 7:44 a.m. May 10 on Interstate 40 Business East/U.S. 421 South near mile marker 13. A 1996 Dodge Dakota pickup truck was overturned on the shoulder of the road.

Martinez was not licensed to operate a vehicle in North Carolina or in any other state, the release said.

Martinez turned himself in at the Kernersville Police Department Wednesday, where he was arrested and transferred to the Forsyth County Detention Center. He is being held on a $3,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 27.
