GREENSBORO — An Illinois man accused of a homicide in Greensboro in 2002 could be coming back to the area this week to face the charge, according to the News & Record.
Stanley Frederick Westphal, 49, of Springfield, Ill., was arrested by U.S. marshals on Feb. 3 at his home for the Dec. 21, 2002, homicide of Anthony Demetrius Coates. Coates, 44, was killed in a room at the Lodge America hotel on Lanada Road off West Wendover Avenue in Greensboro.
Police recently connected Westphal to Coates’ homicide after re-analyzing fingerprints and other evidence from the crime scene.
On Friday, Westphal appeared before a judge in Sangamon County and waived extradition, to go to North Carolina and face the first-degree murder charge, according to officials with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office.
