GREENSBORO, N.C. – A stepfather faces charges after a 3-year-old boy was found wandering alone in Greensboro on Thursday morning.

Robert Terelle Townsend, 35, faces two charges of misdemeanor child abuse and was jailed in Guilford County under a $2,000 secured bond.

The boy was found alone in the 2700 block of Patio Place near Claremont Courts at about 8:30 a.m.

The child since been safely returned to his mother.

Marisa Council, the boy's mother, said this all happened while she was at work and Townsend was supposed to be watching the child.

She said Townsend was asleep and said her son knows how open the door outside.

"He is not a bad guy. He always watches my kids. It's a mistake," she said, while also saying she needs to make better choices about who watches her child.

Right after Council talked to FOX8, she went to the store to buy a safety lock for her door. She said for now, her mom will be watching her children while she works her two jobs.

Townsend has court planned for Friday.
