Man accused of trying to rob Asheboro Walgreens arrested

ASHEBORO, N.C. — Asheboro police have arrested a man accused of trying to rob a customer and steal a cash register from an Asheboro Walgreens.

Ricky Eugene McKenzie, 46, of Asheboro, is charged with common law robbery, attempted common law robbery and assault on a female.

Asheboro police said McKenzie is accused of trying to steal money from the Walgreens at 207 N. Fayetteville St. at about 5:45 a.m. Saturday.

McKenzie allegedly tried to take money out of a female customer’s hand in the check-out line.

Police said the victim fought back and McKenzie eventually stopped trying to rob her. McKenzie then allegedly tried stealing a cash register.

McKenzie allegedly removed the cash register, but only carried it a few steps before dropping it and fleeing the store.

McKenzie was arrested on Monday morning on Elm Street. He was placed in the Randolph County Jail under a $75,000 secured bond.
