LEXINGTON, N.C. -- A Lexington couple accused of collectively scamming people out of thousands of dollars has been barred from business and may owe refunds, according to Attorney General Roy Cooper.

Crystal Spear and Ronnie Griffin are accused of collecting payments from customers for appliance repairs without completing the work or providing a refund.

They advertised through several URLs including ncappliancerepair.com, ncservicecenter.com, appliancerepairnearyou.com and AHome.Services@yahoo.com.

According to a press release from the attorney general’s office, under a temporary restraining order issued by the court, the defendants are barred from accepting payments, advertising, or hiding or transferring records.

Complaints show consumers paid hundreds of dollars for repairs.

Michael Siciliano was living in Winston-Salem when he contacted the two to fix his oven in 2012.

He was told a part needed to be ordered, but didn’t get much help after making payment.

“They kept giving me one excuse after another,” he said.

“Finally, when I told them I was going to report them, they said they would send me a check, they never sent it and then every time I called all I would get was the answering machine,” he said.

The attorney general’s Consumer Protection Division has civil, but not criminal authority.

However, the division is working with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office as it pursues charges in a separate victim’s case.

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office says the charges include failure to work after being paid and obtaining property by false pretense.

Crystal Spear has been served.

Ronnie Griffin has not been served.
