GREENSBORO, N.C. — They’re called layaway angels.

They are strangers who pay off layaway bills without the customer knowing or knowing the customer.

So far, it’s happened 19 times at the Kmart on Bridford Parkway in Greensboro.

It happened to Judith Herrera.

“I couldn’t believe it because nowadays such an act of kindness like that is sad to say not seen very often,” explains Herrera.

Judith Herrera has two young kids. She had two gifts for her 3-year-old son and an outfit for her niece on layaway.

The mom paid the initial $15, but that was the only payment she was able to make.

“I was having a hard time getting it out because towards this time my husband isn’t really working right now, so I hadn’t made another payment on it,” explains Herrera.

Kmart had called Herrera a few times reminding her that she owed $80 and if she didn’t pay soon, the items would have to go back on the shelves.

“Christmas is what 5 days away and 80 dollars wasn’t going to be on the floor waiting for me.”

Then the store called again. Herrera answered thinking it was another call telling her to pay, but it wasn’t.

“The girl on the phone is like, ‘I’m calling from Kmart to let you know that a layaway angel has come in to pay off your layaway’ and I’m like are you serious, are you serious?”

Herrera has no idea who the layaway angel is. It was just someone wanting to do something good.

“I’m just so, so grateful and so happy it’s almost like the toys were for me that’s how happy I am,” admits Herrera.

It made this mom’s Christmas and it made her a believer in those acts of kindness she thought didn’t exist anymore.

“I just can’t say thank you enough.   I’ve never had anything like this happen and I never thought it would happen.”

So far this holiday season, layaway angels have paid off more than $3,000.
