BOLIVIA, N.C. — A large sinkhole closed a road in Brunswick County on Saturday morning, creating a large gap in the roadway.

WECT reported that flooding caused damage on Sunset Harbor Road in Bolivia, and a gap emerged that’s about eight-feet-wide and 20-feet-deep.

Officials said the road had been deteriorating for months and crews were working on it before it washed out.

Investigators told WECT they believe it was caused by a water pipe that collapsed. No injuries were reported and no homes were damaged.

It remains uncertain how long it will take to repair the road.
