LEXINGTON, N.C. — Ku Klux Klan recruitment fliers were scattered in Davidson County yards overnight, according to police and deputies who received several calls about the letters.

The pieces of paper were holiday-themed and encouraged people to join the Klan, wishing them a “Merry White Christmas.”

They were inside small bags of rice, presumably to weigh them down as they were distributed in yards.

Malinda Jacobs lives in Lexington and was shocked to go outside Christmas Eve morning and see the bags all over their neighborhood. She said one of her neighbors was already helping pick up all of the bags and throwing them away. Jacobs took several to the Lexington Police Department.

“This is more than just littering. This is really scary, this is really bad,” Jacobs said. “I am in a state of fear and panic because I don’t know what will be the result of this. What will they do next?”

Neighbor Daminique McDaniel added, “Christmas is supposed to be about God and Jesus Christ. They just turned it into a whole new situation by bringing up issues that should be dead by now.”

Officers at the Police Department told FOX8 the KKK letters were not just spread in Lexington but also in neighborhoods farther into Davidson County.

They encourage anyone who received these letters to notify law enforcement so they can map out where they were distributed.

The same letters in bags of rice appeared in Rowan County neighborhoods over the last few days, too.

The Police Chief of Granite Quarry told reporters there his department does not condone messages of hate or spreading hate. They notified state and local authorities familiar with hate crimes.

Because the letters do not contain specific threats of violence, charges could be limited to littering.

Jacobs believes there should be a bigger investigation.

“If it had ISIS on it, then it would be a whole epidemic, it would be a situation. They might call the SWAT,” Jacobs said. “But because it’s just from the Ku Klux Klan, which is very racist, then it’s not a big deal. They’re just littering. This is very scary.”
