KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -- Police arrested a 22-year-old man over the weekend after a brief chase and receiving assistance from a Kernersville resident.

According to Sgt. David Joyce, Jiwan Devon Williamson was arrested on Saturday night after he and friend fled from a check point, ditched the car they were traveling in, and attempted to run from police on foot near West Mountain Road.

Ricky Ratcliffe said he was smoking a cigarette with friends outside of his home when he saw Williamson running towards his backyard.

"It felt really real when I seen the cops right there -- I'd say 200 yards away -- and then I see the suspect running within 15 feet of me," said Ratcliffe.

Ratcliffe tripped the suspect as he tried to jump a fence into his backyard and then told the suspect to stay on the ground and that he had a gun.

"I was right here, and I was yelling at him 'I have a 9mm [pistol]' and for him to put his hands behind his head and to cross his feet. I told him, 'don't move or I'll shoot,'" Ratcliffe said adding, "I told him I had a gun. I really didn't. I had my hand out."

Eventually, an officer showed up and arrested the suspect who was later identified.

"Afterwards I was like 'what did I just do? Really? Did I just do that?'" Ratcliffe said.

According to Sgt. David Joyce, Williamson was in possession of nearly one half pound of marijuana and thousands of dollars in cash.

State troopers arrested the second man who was traveling with Williamson, but did not release any information.
