KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — On Friday, the body of Kernersville Fire Chief Walt Summerville is being escorted back from the Medical Examiner’s office in Chapel Hill.

Fire Marshal Tim Swaim says Summerville’s body will be returned between noon and 2 p.m.

A ladder truck flying an American flag will escort on its path from the U.S. 66 bridge over Business I-40 onto the highway.  From Highway 66, the truck will travel down East Mountain Street past the Kernersville Town Hall on its way to the Pierce Jefferson Funeral Home at 213 West Mountain St.

Summerville, who was 55, unexpectedly died on Wednesday afternoon, possibly of a heart attack.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church on North Main Street.  Visitation will immediately follow the church service.

Summerville started his fire service career in Boone before being hired in Kernersville in January of 1987.  He worked his way up the ranks and was promoted to chief in February of 2008.
