OXON HILL, Maryland – A jury has awarded a Winston-Salem woman $100,000 after she suffered bedbug bites at a hotel in Maryland and sued the hotel chain.
The Washington Post reported that a jury awarded Stacey Belle the six-figure settlement earlier this week after she filed a lawsuit against Red Roof Inn.
Belle reportedly stayed one night at a Red Roof Inn in Prince George’s County, Maryland in January, 2014 and woke up itching the next day.
Belle said she had welts covering her arms and hand and lifted up her pillow and found bedbugs crawling. Her attorney said she was “completely disgusted.”
The settlement was said to have been compensation for her bites and distress. Belle’s attorney said it is one of the largest sums in damages awarded against a hotel in a bedbug case in Maryland state history.
