LIBERTY, NC -- It's been 11 months since Julian Fire Chief Jeff Folwell fell 25 feet from a highway overpass and lived to tell about it.

On December 16, 2011 he wasn't sure he'd make it to where he is today.

Now he says he is 70-75% of what he was before the fall, but a day after Thanksgiving he's thankful to have recovered at all.

Folwell was off duty, helping a stranded motorist when he jumped over a guard rail to avoid a hydroplaning car. It was dark, and he didn't realize he was standing on a bridge until he fell and broke nearly everything on the left side of his body.

Folwell struggled through surgeries, infections, and immense pain until he began walking again in May.

Now he still has trouble with his left side, including a left leg that is now significantly shorter than the right one.

"I'm just glad I'm alive," Folwell said.
