KURE BEACH, N.C. — A juvenile male humpback whale washed ashore in Kure Beach on Wednesday morning, according to the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher.

The whale was estimated to be 1 to 2 years old, aquarium staff said.

The whale measured about nine meters and weighed approximately 15,000 pounds.

Aquarium staff assisted researchers from the University of North Carolina Wilmington Marine Mammal Stranding Program during a necropsy on the beach to determine the cause of death.

Aquarium staff said they will post the necropsy results on their Facebook page when they are in.
