HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C. — A humpback whale was found dead on the beach near the end of Hatteras Island on Monday, according to The Virginian-Pilot.

Cyndy Holda, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service, told the newspaper that the whale was a juvenile male, measuring 33 feet long.

Officials said the whale showed no outward signs of trauma.

Staffers from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the Marine Stranding Network and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission are conducting a necropsy to determine what caused the whale to die.

A biologist told The Virginian-Pilot that humpback whales usually migrate south from New England to the south Atlantic around this time of year.
