GREENSBORO, N.C. – Howard Coble is currently in critical condition at an intensive care unit at a hospital, according to Dr. Ray Coble, his nephew and power of attorney.

Howard Coble, 84, is on a ventilator at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro after complications from skin cancer surgery two weeks ago.

The former U.S. Representative is doing a “little better” today and is able to communicate by tapping his foot for yes or no answers, according to his nephew.

Howard Coble was admitted to the hospital on Sept. 8 for surgery to remove skin cancer lesions and a lymph node.

His nephew said that not long after the procedure, he developed complication with his breathing and was unable to swallow. He was put on a ventilator.

Howard Coble was taken off the ventilator a couple of days ago and started experiencing the same problems, so doctors put him back on it Monday.

Ray Coble said it looks as if his uncle will probably have to have long-term care indefinitely.

Ray Coble said a decision will probably have to be made “within a day or two” whether to give him a tracheotomy and a feeding tube. This will only be done if doctors feel he can tolerate the procedure.

Howard Coble, of Greensboro, is a former U.S. Representative for North Carolina’s 6th congressional district, serving from 1985 to 2015.

He was succeeded by Mark Walker, who said Coble and his family are in his prayers.

The 6th district includes portions of Guilford, Alamance, Durham, Granville and Orange counties and all of Caswell, Person, Rockingham, Surry and Stokes counties.

FOX8’s Cindy Farmer sat down with Coble for a recent interview shortly before he was hospitalized. Check out the video above.
