BIRCH RUN, Mich. — It’s not too often you hear of happy endings in the news, but that’s exactly what happened for a local newlywed couple.
They were staying in a hotel room after their wedding and they left something very important behind.
“I would be scared, afraid someone would take it,” Tequita Mays said.
When you stay in a hotel room sometimes you forget something and often you’ll never see that item again.
One newly-wed couple left behind something very important.
“It was sitting on the bed,” Mays said.
Mays is a housekeeper at the Best Western in Birch Run.
When she heard a guest lost a small bag she knew what she had to do.
“I just picked it up and brought it here, didn’t look in it or nothing,” Mays said.
Mays thought maybe the bridal-looking bag contained small things a bride would need for her big day, but it turned out to be much more than that.
She soon found out it wasn’t just a make-up bag, but actually $8,600 the bride had left behind.
“I was surprised. I thought it was just a make-up bag from the bride. She was very happy. She gave me a great big hug and happy to have her bag back,” Mays said.
Samara Shuman is the housekeeping supervisor.
“I’m very proud of her,” Shuman said.
She said she knows the temptation you have to keep things you find.
“Very relieved. Very happy. Proud of us. I’d be proud if someone returned my items because I know how tempting it is sometimes,” Shuman said.
The bag contained money from the couple’s recent wedding, something they surely did not want to lose.
“I would be very worried and freaking out that I left my money behind. Because even $500 is a big deal and they left a large amount. I mean, that was their wedding too, they could do anything with it,” Shuman said.
Mays said she wasn’t trying to be a hero, she was just doing what she knew was right.
“I would want my lost belongings back. I would want to return someone else’s,” Mays said.
The housekeepers said doing the right thing pays off. They said the newlyweds even left them a big tip.
