HIGH POINT, N.C. -- The High Point Greenway is a popular spot for runners, particularly High Point University students. But today it was a crime scene.
High Point police said that around 1:20pm, a 19-year-old was robbed at gunpoint by two men on the greenway.
The male victim was uninjured, but cops said the suspects escaped with his cell phone and cash.
Some HPU students said they were shocked to hear about the brazen daytime robbery.
"I never would've thought that would happen during the day," said Olivia Orrill, a High Point University junior, who uses the trail often.
Students at HPU were notified of the armed robbery via the campus alert system.
"I live with 14 other girls and as soon as we got the text, everyone in the house said, 'Did everyone else just get that text?'" Orrill said. "I don't think many people will be coming [to the greenway] often."
Junior Dan Goldman said incidents like this are not unheard of near HPU's campus. Goldman said he was robbed at gunpoint about a week and a half ago.
"I went inside to buy something and when I came out and hopped in my car, there was someone in my backseat," Goldman said. "He put a gun to my throat and said give me your phone and your money."
Goldman said that was late at night, but hearing of a broad daylight robbery is a wakeup call.
"This is an eye opener," he said. "Being at High Point University we're always gated and taken care of. You kind of forget you're in the real world."
Police are still searching for the two suspects, but said they have good leads in the case.
