COVID vaccines are available to everyone five and older in North Carolina, according to the NC Department of Health and Human Services. Click here to learn how you can get a two-dose vaccine or booster.

As the state announces the inclusion of new groups, counties are able to progress at their own discretion. Counties may fall behind the state due to vaccine availability or other limitations.

Group 1 includes health care workers with in-person patient contact, as well as long-term care staff and residents.

Group 2 includes anyone 65 years or older, regardless of health status or living situation.

Group 3 includes frontline essential workers.

The CDC defines frontline essential workers as workers who are in sectors essential to the functioning of society and who are at substantially higher risk for exposure to COVID-19.

North Carolina first opened vaccinations to staff of schools and childcare facilities before declaring all other frontline essential workers eligible.

Group 4 includes adults at high risk for exposure and increased risk of severe illness.

That means anyone between the ages of 16 and 64 with high-risk medical conditions that increase risk of severe disease from COVID-19. That can include cancer, COPD, serious heart conditions, sickle cell disease, Type 2 diabetes and others.

Sometime after high-risk patients become eligible, the state will begin vaccinating any people who are incarcerated, living in close group living settings and essential workers who have not already gotten the vaccine in previous groups. The state has not announced when it will begin vaccinating this second half of Group 4.

The CDC defines “essential workers” as those in transportation and logistics, water and wastewater, food service, shelter and housing (e.g., construction), finance (e.g., bank tellers), information technology and communications, energy, legal, media, public safety (e.g., engineers) and public health workers.

Group 5 is for anyone else who wants the COVID-19 vaccine so long as the meet the age requirement for the vaccine. You must be at least 16 years old to receive the Pfizer vaccine or 18 years old for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

Alamance County

  • STATUS: Appointments are available by request on the Alamance County website.
  • GROUP: Alamance County is accepting appointments for anyone as long as they meet the age requirements for the vaccine (16 for Pfizer, 18 for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson).
  • CONTACT: COVID-19 vaccination appointments can be made through the new online appointment system www.vaccinatealamance.com. For those without internet access, the COVID-19 vaccine call center is open to schedule appointments. The number to call for an appointment is (336) 290-0650. More information is available here.

  • FEMA VACCINATION SITES: CLINICS: Two FEMA-supported COVID-19 vaccination sites opened in Alamance County at the CityGate Dream Center and Eric Lane on March 19. Each location will operate 4 days a week (Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays) with the capacity to provide up to 300 vaccinations per day. Davidson County

  • STATUS: Appointments can be scheduled on the Davidson County website as they become available.
  • GROUP: Davidson County is accepting appointments for anyone as long as they meet the age requirements for the vaccine (16 for Pfizer, 18 for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson).
  • CLINIC(S): Davidson County Health Department and Davidson-Davie Community College.

Davie County

  • STATUS: First dose clinics are held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. Second dose clinics are held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 .m. Wednesday. These clinics take place at the Davie County Community Park at 151 Southwood Drive in Mocksville.
  • GROUP: This county is vaccinating people 65 and older, as well as frontline essential workers, health workers, school faculty and staff, childcare workers and people ages 16 to 64 with high-risk medical conditions. Announcements about who is eligible for each clinic will be provided at the Davie County website or by calling (336) 753-6540 after 3 p.m. on Mondays.

Forsyth County

  • STATUS: Appointments can be scheduled on the Forsyth County website as they become available.
  • GROUP: Seniors, health care workers, essential workers and people with medical conditions that put them at higher risk of serious illness are eligible.

Guilford County

Randolph County

  • STATUS: Randolph Health continues to offer a COVID-19 vaccine pre-registration waitlist for their vaccine.
  • GROUP: This county is accepting appointments for anyone as long as they meet the age requirements for the vaccine (16 for Pfizer, 18 for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson).

Rockingham County

Rowan County

  • STATUS: Rowan County will update the online portal as clinics are scheduled and appointments become available.
  • GROUP: This county is vaccinating people 65 and older, as well as frontline essential workers, health workers, school faculty and staff and childcare workers.

Stokes County

  • STATUS: Stokes County continues to offer a COVID-19 vaccine pre-registration waitlist for their vaccine.
  • GROUP: We will not open up vaccines to the 65+ group until we are finished with the 75+ group.
  • CONTACT: If you have already called or emailed your name is on the list. You will be receiving a call to let you know what time to come. Please be patient as we are overwhelmed and short-staffed at the moment. If you are wanting to be added to the list for the COVID vaccine please call 336-593-2400, then choose option 7. You will be asked to leave your name, phone number, and date of birth. You will get a call back to schedule an appointment. If you would rather email your information you can to covid19@co.stokes.nc.us.
  • On Feb. 3, the Stokes County Health Department released the following: “We have received several emails and messages regarding the COVID Vaccine. We will not be responding to the emails or messages until we call you to schedule an appointment. If you have sent an email or called and left a message, we have you on the waitlist. If you have emailed or called about volunteering, we have a list for that as well. It is important to note we are receiving limited amounts of vaccine and over the next three weeks, each week we anticipate receiving 100 first doses for Stokes County. Please be patient as we are waiting on the state to send us more vaccines.”

Surry County

  • GROUP: In our efforts to streamline a COVID-19 vaccination plan, we are asking that anyone who is interested in receiving the vaccine to please register online. Yadkin County

North Carolina vaccination plan

Below is the full breakdown of phases in the state vaccination plan.

Phase 1A: Health care workers fighting COVID-19 & Long-Term Care staff and residents.

  • Health care workers caring for and working directly with patients with COVID-19, including staff responsible for cleaning and maintenance in those areas
  • Health care workers administering vaccine
  • Long-term care staff and residents—people in skilled nursing facilities and in adult, family and group homes.

Phase 1b: Adults 75 years or older and frontline essential workers.

There is not enough vaccine for everyone in this phase to be vaccinated at the same time. Vaccinations will be available to groups in the following order.

  • Group 1: Anyone 75 years or older, regardless of health status or living situation
  • Group 2: Health care workers and frontline essential workers 50 years or older
    The CDC defines frontline essential workers as first responders (e.g., firefighters and police officers), corrections officers, food and agricultural workers, U.S. Postal Service workers, manufacturing workers, grocery store workers, public transit workers, and those who work in the education sector (teachers and support staff members) as well as child care workers.
  • Group 3: Health care workers and frontline essential workers of any age

Phase 2: Adults at high risk for exposure and at increased risk of severe illness.

Vaccinations will happen by group in the following order:

  • Group 1: Anyone 65-74 years old, regardless of health status or living situation
  • Group 2: Anyone 16-64 years old with high-risk medical conditions that increase risk of severe disease from COVID such as cancer, COPD, serious heart conditions, sickle cell disease, Type 2 diabetes, among others, regardless of living situation
  • Group 3: Anyone who is incarcerated or living in other close group living settings who is not already vaccinated due to age, medical condition or job function.
  • Group 4: Essential workers not yet vaccinated.
    The CDC defines these as workers in transportation and logistics, water and wastewater, food service, shelter and housing (e.g., construction), finance (e.g., bank tellers), information technology and communications, energy, legal, media, and public safety (e.g., engineers), and public health workers.

Phase 3: Students

  • College and university students
  • K-12 students age 16 and over. Younger children will only be vaccinated when the vaccine is approved for them.

Phase 4: Everyone who wants a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccination.
