GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — From now through January, Guilford County Schools is hosting “Magnet Mondays” — allowing parents to come to open house sessions at magnet and choice schools across the district.

The Perdue family visited Andrews Aviation Academy at T.W. Andrews High School in High Point.

Trey Perdue is in the 8th grade, but wants to fly planes in the Navy.

“I started out wanting to be a mechanic, but when I saw all these different things were here I decided I wanted to be in the Navy,” he said.

“We decided on Andrews because we actually live in this community and we wanted to support the school and help it move forward,” his grandmother, Maxine Perdue, added.

Andrews Aviation Academy offers six tracks including career pilot, engineering, avionics tech, airport business management, airframe and power plant mechanic/technician and aerospace simulation/game design.

The magnet option appeals to many families because their children can focus on a career path and get valuable experience while in high school, including paid internships and job shadowing.

“We also have industry certifications they can earn such as the SolidWorks mechanical engineering certification that is needed for many different engineering businesses around the world,” Dr. Cynthia Waters, Andrews Aviation Academy director, said.

The other magnet program the school offers is the Early College of Health Science.

It offers courses including nursing fundamentals, health science, and sports medicine. Juniors and seniors are able to work off campus to complete their practicum.

These students can also earn certification and college credits early.

“One of the good things with a magnet program, we’re able to reach out to any student in the district so you don’t have to be in the Andrews district,” Erica Jones, academy facilitator at the Early College of Health Science, said.

The application requirements vary according to each school and/or program. They often include the application form, letters of recommendation and/or references, and academic record.

You can find the open house dates here.

The application period opens Jan. 11, 2016.
