GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- As of her retirement in Februry 2013, Guilford County Manager Brend Jones Fox will received an extra four month's pay, which means she'll get a severance of $61,000.

It's part of the County's plan to get some longtime employees, who are paid more, to retire.

Commissioners approved the severance for all 30-year employees on the March 1 consent agenda, which means there was no discussion of the policy change in council. Now some commissioners are saying there should have been discussion.

Skip Alston, chairman of the board, said the time for discussion was March 1, and if his colleagues didn't realize they had an issue with the policy change that they wanted discussed, they should've brought it up then.

"If they are not reading their material, if they're not doing their work then they shouldn't be elected officials. And shame on them," Alston said.

Commissioner Billy Yow voted against the consent agenda that included this severance package. He was outnumbered 7-3, and what's worse, he believes his colleagues and many politicians do not read the information about which they vote.

"We call it Nancy Pelosi politics. Pass it now. Read it later. There's been many instances where they've come back and said we didn't know this was on the agenda when indeed it is, and it simply comes from lack of interest in doing their elective duties," Yow said.

Commissioner Kay Cashion voted for the consent agenda and says she understood the plan was to get some of the 45 longest-serving employees to retire, but says she had no clue Brenda Jones Fox would be one of them nor how much she'd receive.

Other miffed commissioners said they plan to bring up the bonus at the next commissioner's meeting to try and reconsider the policy change.
