GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro Zoning Commission unanimously approved rezoning for the controversial area at the Friendly-Hobbs intersection.
The commission approved rezoning the property into a planned unit development, which allows for both commercial and residential uses.
“We assert that nearby retail will add to home value and quality of life,” said attorney Tom Terrell, representing Halpern Development of Atlanta.
Terrell showed renderings of the plans that include a gourmet grocery store, shops and residential homes. The plans also call for saving mature trees, limiting business hours and building a sound proof wall to help ease neighbors’ concerns.
“[Neighbors] don’t deem this attractive to them,” said attorney Don Eggleston, representing residents in a group called the Friendly Coalition. “[Residents] do not consider a shopping center there to offer them anything that they don’t already have access to.”
For the past three years, three developers have filed four different applications for the property, including one that would have brought a Trader Joe’s to the property. But those applications were fought by residents who feared rezoning would bring more traffic and noise.
Residents now plan to appeal to city council members during a public hearing scheduled for May 19.
