GREENSBORO, N.C. — It was a lucky day for one Greensboro woman when she decided to play the 2014 MONOPOLY Game at McDonald’s last month.
After ordering a Filet-O-Fish sandwich, a woman identified only as Donna F., peeled off the “Free Parking” game stamp at the McDonald’s on Wallburg Landing Drive in Winston-Salem, revealing that she had won $100,000.
“I’m still pinching myself,” Donna said. “It’s kind of a delayed reaction. It was almost a week later before I realized I had won.”
Donna is a regular McDonald’s customer who usually orders the Filet-O-Fish sandwich. She’s been collecting the Monopoly stamps for years but hasn’t always remembered to check them.
“I was searching for change and ran across them in my purse,” Donna said of the winning game piece. “While eating my lunch I picked them up to look at them. At first it did not register with me, because I thought you need two or three stamps for most of the winning combinations.”
The self-described “silent gifter” plans to use her $100,000 prize to rebuild her credit, add to retirement savings, do some home repairs and pay off her son’s college loans.
Donna added that she is “grateful to the McDonald’s organization for creating such an enormous incentive on a yearly basis to engage their customers.”
KT Tompkins, Director of Operations at the Winston-Salem McDonald’s, said that she was a McDonald’s manager in 1987 when the first MONOPOLY Game at McDonald’s began and that this was the first winner she has had for such a large amount.
“We are thrilled that one of our customers won a prize of this magnitude,” said Thompkins. “Our organization wishes Donna and her family all the best with her winnings.”
This year, the MONOPOLY Game at McDonald’s returned for its 22nd season and delighted customers across the country with a wide range of prizes from partners such as Target, Redbox, Shell, VIZIO, Delta Air Lines, Shutterfly and Softcard, among others.
There were four $100,000 prizes through the “Free Parking” Game Stamp, ten $5,000 Target Gift Cards with early access to the Black Friday in-store sale and one $1 million dollar prize.
To play the game, consumers are able to collect game pieces on a wide variety of menu favorites.
