GREENSBORO, N.C. — A woman was arrested Tuesday after allegedly burning her 2-month-old child’s feet, according to magistrate’s order.
Loretta Ernestine Marie Ford, 22, of Greensboro, was charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.
“I looked over and the baby kept crying, and crying, and crying,” Kim Nelson said.
Sitting on her porch Tuesday afternoon, Nelson knew something bad was happening next door.
“She put the baby back in the seat and stuff and started punching the baby in the chest,” she said. “Then started lighting her feet, the bottom of her feet up.”
Nelson and her roommate, Sidney Sims, rushed over to stop the mother.
“I asked the lady for her child and she released her to me. I comforted the child and noticed something more extreme, in regards to the burns on her feet,” Sims said. “The huge blisters. The actual impact of having an infant with severe burns on her feet to her flesh.”
Nelson and Sims said the 2-month-old also had welts all over her body. They took the child to the hospital.
“That child was in extreme pain,” Sims said. “She was diagnosed with second-degree burns, third on her toes and the bottom of her feet.”
FOX8 stopped by the mother’s house, but no one was at the address listed on court documents.
Her neighbors are hoping mom and baby get the help they need.
“It’s a terrible thing for a child, for a newborn, to go through something like that,” Nelson said. “I hope the mother gets help and the child is alright.”
A Greensboro police spokesperson said the case is still under investigation.
The Department of Social Services is now involved.
Ford’s first court appearance is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
