GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The City of Greensboro is holding two meetings over the next few weeks to discuss ideas that would redevelop the Heritage House property.
The nearly 200-room structure on West Meadowview Road was condemned last summer. The former hotel turned condominium complex was seen as a public safety nuisance and rife with structural and code issues. It was ultimately closed due to outstanding utility bills owed to the City of Greensboro and Duke Energy.
City leaders say they’re considering three concepts to redevelop the land -- all three involve tearing the current structure down. The ideas include building either industrial space, a senior care center or an indoor recreation center.
Greensboro Assistant City Manager David Parrish said demolishing the building is not a given, but it is the far cheaper choice than fixing the issues in the dilapidated building.
According to city estimates, restoring the complex to bring it back up to code would cost as much as $20 million. Demolishing the building and redeveloping would cost the city under $3 million.
“The first step -- removing it and closing it down because it was condemned -- was a big step. Now, removing the structure and moving forward with the property is the main process as we move forward.,” said Parrish.
City leaders said public feedback on these ideas will help determine a plan moving forward.
The city council will discuss the ideas during a work session next week. Then, there is a public hearing scheduled on Aug. 5.
