GREENSBORO, N.C. — Family and friends of LaToya Fountain all agree she did not deserve to die.

The 33-year-old mother is from Greensboro. Family members say she temporarily moved to New Orleans but was scheduled to move back to Greensboro next week. Her two sons, Akeem and Peris, are enrolled to start school in Greensboro. One of them in pre-K and the other in kindergarten.

“She was the best friend anybody could ask for,” said Tamekia Hamlet, who has been friends with the victim for almost two decades.

Family members say Fountain, her boyfriend and their two children were sitting on the couch Monday night in their New Orleans home. While the family was watching television in their apartment, gunshots came into their unit.

The children and father are OK. Investigators say the mother died on the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest.

So many questions remain unanswered, including who shot into the apartment, how many people are involved and a motive. Deputies with the Jefferson Parish Sherriff’s Office say the case under investigation.

Fountain’s family wants the funeral to be in Greensboro. They are trying to arrange for her body to be sent here and also hope her two son’s will be able to continue with the plan of starting school in Greensboro. The family has created a GoFundMe account to help with funeral costs. Those who would like to donate can click here.

Family members say there was no reason for Fountain to be the target of this shooting. Family members say the victim’s boyfriend has been living in New Orleans for a few years now.
