GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Police said a Greensboro homeowner shot and killed a man in self-defense during an apparent robbery attempt earlier this month.

Police were called to 803 Ross Ave. around 3:20 p.m. on Nov. 11 and found Patrick Lamont Powell, 32, of Burlington dead inside the home.

Nathan Ohara Ford, 32, the homeowner, was found in the street suffering from gunshot wounds. Police said he ran into the street to find help.

Ford was taken by ambulance to Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The two men reportedly shot each other inside the home. Powell first shot Ford and Ford returned fire in self-defense, according to police.

Police said Powell was planning to rob Ford.

Powell and Ford did not know each other, but police said it was not a random shooting.

The News & Record reported that Ford will not face charges in the shooting, but officers are still investigating.
