GREENSBORO, N.C. — A man held in Guilford County jail since May 1, 2013, on a first-degree murder charge, went home this past weekend after a jury found him not guilty.
Jovon Derrell Clarke, 31, of 924 E. Cone Blvd. in Greensboro was found not guilty Friday in the April 24, 2013, shooting death of 28-year-old Michael Thomas McLaurin at the Margate on Cone apartments. He also was found not guilty of possession of a firearm by a felon.
Clarke still faces charges of indecent exposure for an incident involving a female detention officer at Guilford County jail on April 11, 2014. That case is scheduled for trial on Jan. 20.
The jury began deliberations Thursday afternoon on Clarke’s first-degree murder charge after Clarke’s attorney, Ames Chamberlin discredited the state’s key witness, Clarke’s sister Che Pierce, painting her as a jealous sibling with a criminal background who couldn’t get her story straight.
