GREENSBORO, N.C. -- People living near Greensboro's Bessemer Shopping Center are no longer waiting for a grocery store to fill the nearly empty center. They’re starting their own instead.

Renaissance Community Co-op organizers have been fundraising and recruiting members for the co-op grocery store for a year.

The goal is to raise $2 million and open the co-op grocery store in the fall of 2014. Renaissance Community Co-op is halfway to their $2 million goal.

Supporters like Sadie Blue say the store could employ 20 people and bring affordable meats and produce to the community.

"Considering people have limited transportation, it would be great to put something in the neighborhood that's convenient and close.”
